This is a private guided tour
Our unique walking tour following his footprint is a perfect introduction to the city while learning about his life and its profound influence on his work.
In the early 20th century. Granada was a small provincial city in the south of Spain whose population had not increased in 500 years. The economy was based on agriculture, in particular sugar beet and tobacco production. At the same time, religion and religious traditions played a major part in country life.
Lorca, was born in the small village of Fuente Vaqueros, not far from Granada, where the main crop was tobacco. His father was a wealthy landowner and he grew up with his siblings in a large extended family, with servants, and private tutors. He was a sensitive, happy child and extremely artistic, immersed in popular local culture and Andalusian folklore..
The family left the countryside and moved to Granada during his childhood. A gifted pianist, Federico planned to be a musician, but also turned to writing poems and plays which he produced himself. Although he attended law courses at Granada University, to please his father, he was not a diligent student. He spent time writing poetry and reading at the library.
He made many friends, spending his twenties in Madrid, moving in avant-garde circles, where his poetry won many accolades. He went to New York, Canada, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Argentina, travelling for a few years, consolidating his international reputation as a successful poet and acclaimed dramatist. The young genius returned to Spain, but his life was tragically cut short at the very beginning of the Spanish Civil War.
Our fascinating walking tour of Granada recreates Lorca’s early life and reveals how much his genius was inspired by his beloved city. It is a unique opportunity to experience his life and work through the actual places he knew which have remained unchanged for over 100 years.
Lorca is for Granada as important as the Alhambra. He was a genius made by himself. He absorbs the best of the Spanish popular and traditional culture and made it becoming modern and international. No doubt, Federico Garcia Lorca gave so much to Granada. We want to introduce him to you.
